Abu Simbel

Located near the southern city of Aswan, the Abu Simbel temples are two massive temples that date back to ancient Egypt. The temples lay in Nubia , on the western bank of Lake Nasser. The temples are comprised of the Great Temple and the Small Temple. Their unprecedented structure has amazed millions, and continues to do so until today.

The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharoah Ramses II In the 13th century BC. They were created as a monument for the Pharoah and his queen Nefertari as a commemorative structure

The Great Temple :

The Great Temple took approximately twenty years to build and was completed under the reign of Ramses the Great in 1265 BC. They dedicated this temple to the ancient gods Amun, Re-Horakhty and Ptah, as well as to Ramses the Great. The Great Temple remains to be considered the grandest and most structurally beautiful temples built during the reign of Ramses ll. The temple is decorated with colossal statues of the Pharaoh, among other carvings in the façade all sculpted directly from the rock, which the temple Is located on.

The Small Temple :

Built about 100 meters northeast of the Great Temple lies the Small Temple of Hathor and Nefertari. The Small Temple was created as a monumental dedication to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari, the wife of Ramses II. Although called the Small Temple, Its structure is equally breathtaking as an architectural feat for its time.
